The filing deadline for 2024 tax returns is April 30, 2025 for most people. The payment of any balance owing is also due on that date.
However, if you or your spouse or common-law partner was self-employed in 2024, the deadline for filing your return may be extended to June 16, 2025 (June 15 falling on a Sunday).
Important: Even if you have until June 16, 2025 to file your return, any balance due for 2024 must be paid no later than April 30, 2025.
Filing your return on time allows you to avoid:
potential interest and penalties;
an interruption in benefit and credit payments (e.g., GST/HST credit, Canada Child Benefit, Old Age Security benefits).
You can contribute to your RRSP at any time during the year, up to the first 60 days of the following year. Contributions made in January and February can be deducted from your taxable income for the previous year.
For the 2024 tax year, the deadline for contributing is March 3, 2025. If you contribute after this date, you will have to wait for your 2025 tax return to claim these contributions as a deduction.
Before contributing to an RRSP, make sure of your contribution room and eligibility. It is your responsibility to check your available contribution room and ensure that you meet the eligibility criteria for this plan. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) may impose penalties for excess or unauthorized contributions.
Don't panic! Issuers have a deadline to provide you with your slips, and this date varies depending on the type of slip. Here are the deadlines for the most common slips:
T3 / Relevé 16 : March 31, 2025
T4 / Relevé 1 : February 28, 2025
T4A / Relevé 2 : February 28, 2025
T5 / Relevé 3 : February 28, 2025
T5007 / Relevé 5 : February 28, 2025
T5008 / Relevé 18 : February 28, 2025
If the deadline has passed and you still have not received your slip, do not hesitate to contact the issuer. You can also find your federal slips on your Canada Revenue Agency account, or on Revenu Québec's website for provincial slips.
The annual contribution limit for the Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) for 2025 is $7,000.
As for the First Home Savings Account (FHSA), the annual limit is $8,000, for a lifetime maximum of $40,000.
Before contributing to a TFSA or FHSA, make sure of your contribution room and eligibility. It is your responsibility to check your available contribution room and ensure that you meet the eligibility criteria for these plans. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) may impose penalties for excess or unauthorized contributions.
You can now reserve your spot with me for the preparation of your 2024 tax returns.
I am looking forward to working with you this tax season.
